Genshin Impact Leveling Guide

Adventure Rank milestones, character and weapon leveling priorities, talent investment, and resource budgeting from AR 1 to 55.

Leveling efficiently means knowing what to upgrade at each Adventure Rank — and what to skip. This guide walks you through AR milestones, how to invest in characters and weapons without wasting Mora, and when to start farming artifacts seriously.

Adventure Rank Milestones

Adventure Rank gates nearly everything. Rush AR through quests and exploration early, but pause at key breakpoints to level your team before raising World Level.

  • AR 16: Co-op unlocks. Finish Mondstadt Archon Quest and level your main DPS to 60 if possible
  • AR 20: Spiral Abyss unlocks (Floors 1–8). Start building a second team even if you can't clear high floors yet
  • AR 25: Weekly boss talent materials become relevant. Cap your main DPS weapon and character to current max
  • AR 30: Inazuma access. Enemy HP jumps at World Level 3 — make sure your team can handle it before ascending
  • AR 35: Artifact domains unlock at higher tiers. Still not worth heavy farming — focus on talents and weapons
  • AR 40: Character and weapon ascensions to level 80. Start planning your first artifact set targets
  • AR 45: Guaranteed 5★ artifact drops from domains. This is when serious artifact farming begins
  • AR 50: Character max level 90, talent levels 8+. Push Spiral Abyss with your core teams
  • AR 55: World Level 8 cap. Endgame resin goes to artifact optimization and new character builds

World Level Management

World Level increases automatically when you hit AR thresholds (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55). Higher WL means tougher enemies but better drops. You can lower WL by 1 for 24 hours if content feels too hard — use this after rushing AR without leveling your team.

  • Many players stay at WL 5 (AR 45) until their main DPS has a solid 4-piece artifact set and level 80/90
  • Lowering WL does not reduce your AR or lock content — it only makes overworld enemies easier temporarily
  • Boss and domain difficulty is fixed by domain level, not WL — artifact domains at AR 45 are the same regardless
  • If you're dying in the overworld constantly, lower WL and level talents before pushing again

Character Leveling Priority

Spreading resources across eight characters leaves you with eight weak characters. Focus on 1–2 main DPS first, then the supports that enable them.

  • Priority 1: Main DPS to max level for your current AR cap — they deal the most damage on-field
  • Priority 2: Key supports (Bennett, Xingqiu, Nahida) to level 70–80 — their bursts and passives matter more than ATK
  • Priority 3: Secondary DPS/sub-DPS to level 70–80 with burst talent leveled
  • Priority 4: Flex and exploration characters — only level if you use them regularly
  • Never level all four team members equally early game — one strong DPS clears content faster
  • Healers and shielders can stay at level 70 if their shield/heal scales off HP/DEF and talents are leveled

Weapon Leveling Priority

Weapons are often neglected but matter enormously. A level 90 weapon on a level 70 character outperforms the reverse. Base ATK on the weapon directly affects all damage calculations.

  • Level your main DPS weapon to match their character level — always
  • Level support weapons to at least 70; prioritize their substat (ER for Favonius, HP% for TTDS)
  • Don't waste resources on 3★ weapons past early game unless it's a niche build (Black Tassel on Zhongli)
  • Prototype and craftable weapons (Iron Sting, Whiteblind, Amenoma) are worth leveling to 90
  • R5 craftable often beats R1 5★ for supports — don't feel forced to pull weapons for F2P teams
  • Weapon ascension materials come from daily domains — farm on the correct day or wait for Sunday

Talent Leveling Order

Talents multiply your damage more than most players expect. Crown of Insight (weekly boss drop) should go to your main DPS burst or normal attack — never waste crowns on supports unless they're also DPS.

  • Main DPS: Burst ≥ Normal Attack ≥ Skill (varies by character — check their guide)
  • Sub-DPS off-field: Burst first (Xiangling, Xingqiu, Fischl), then Skill
  • Support/Healer: Burst first (Bennett, Zhongli), Skill second — Normal Attack rarely matters
  • Level to 6 first on all key talents, then push main DPS to 8–10
  • Talents 9–10 require weekly boss materials from the same boss — plan which characters share a boss
  • Bennett burst to 8–9 is higher priority than leveling a second DPS's normal attack

Mora & Material Budgeting

Mora runs out fast. Hero's Wit and Adventurer's EXP are less scarce than Mora and ascension gems. Plan your weekly resin spending around who you're actively building.

  • Ley Line Outcrops (gold) are worth it when Mora-poor — 20 resin for ~120k Mora at AR 45+
  • Don't level artifacts past +16 until you confirm good substats at +4 and +8
  • Weekly bosses: pick 3 characters who share materials and run those bosses every week
  • Save Hero's Wit for when you have enough Mora to level — hoarding EXP books without Mora is wasteful
  • Local specialties can't be bought easily — farm them during exploration, not dedicated resin days
  • Parametric Transformer (weekly) gives random ascension materials — always feed it something

When to Start Artifact Farming

The single biggest mistake intermediate players make is farming artifacts too early. Pre-AR 45, domain drop rates waste most of your resin. Use Gladiator/Wanderer drops from bosses and chests instead.

Full drop rate table and farming tips

  • Before AR 45: equip any 4★/5★ pieces with correct main stats — don't chase set bonuses
  • At AR 45: farm one domain for your main DPS's best set — 20 resin per run, guaranteed 5★
  • Target main stats first: CRIT Rate/DMG circlet, Elemental/ATK% goblet, ATK%/ER sands
  • Flowers and plumes: HP main stat is fine — prioritize substats (CRIT, ER, ATK%)
  • A +16 artifact with good substats beats a +20 with wrong main stat every time
  • See the Farming Guide for drop rate tables and domain recommendations

Team Investment Order

Build one complete team before starting a second. A fully invested National Team or Hyperbloom team clears more content than two half-built teams.

Browse meta team comps

  • Step 1: Pick a team template you can fill with your roster (National, Hyperbloom, Freeze, etc.)
  • Step 2: Level main DPS + weapon to AR cap with correct main-stat artifacts (even if not perfect set)
  • Step 3: Level core supports to 70–80 with burst talents at 6–8
  • Step 4: Farm the target artifact domain at AR 45 for your main DPS 4-piece
  • Step 5: Add a second team for Abyss — reuse supports where possible (Bennett fits everywhere)
  • Browse team comps for proven templates and member roles

F2P Leveling Tips

Free and low-spending players should prioritize permanent investments over banner chasing. These characters and resources pay off across every account stage.

  • Free characters from events and Archon Quests (Xiangling, Diona, Barbara) are meta-relevant — level them
  • Permanent Standard Banner pulls (Acquaint Fate from AR rewards) can give core 5★ like Jean or Diluc
  • Don't pull on every banner — save Primogems for characters that complete a team you already have pieces for
  • Battle Pass ($10) gives a strong weapon and resources — best value if you spend at all
  • Craftable weapons save Primogems — Prototype series from billets are excellent
  • Daily commissions (60 Primogems/day) and events are your primary Primogem income

Daily & Weekly Routine

A consistent routine prevents resin waste and keeps your account progressing between new content drops.

  • Daily: 4 commissions → Katheryne reward → spend resin (don't cap at 160)
  • Daily: Send characters on expeditions for free materials
  • Weekly: 3× weekly boss (first three at 30 resin each) for talent materials and artifacts
  • Weekly: Parametric Transformer, reputation bounties (if unlocked), and Abyss attempts if ready
  • Farm talent/weapon domains on their scheduled days — use Sunday to catch up
  • Spend Fragile Resin during double-reward events for maximum efficiency

Quick Leveling Checklist

Use this checklist whenever you hit a new AR cap or pull a character you want to build.

  • ☐ Main DPS at current AR level cap with leveled weapon
  • ☐ Key talents at 6+ (burst/skill for supports, burst/NA for DPS)
  • ☐ Artifacts with correct main stats (even mixed sets)
  • ☐ Supports at 70+ with ER weapons and sands
  • ☐ Team comp with working elemental reactions
  • ☐ Food cooked for boss fights and Abyss attempts
  • ☐ Weekly bosses cleared for talent materials
  • ☐ Resin not sitting at 160 — spend it daily
